When a water heater starts leaking, many people think immediately that it needs to be replaced, but this isn’t always the case. Here are five causes of water heater leaking that could save your wallet from an expensive water heater replacement.
The Supply Lines
The easiest leak to fix is one from the supply lines that carry water to and from the water heater. Because the supply lines are above the tank, water may be dripping onto the tank and making it look like the tank itself is leaking. You can easily fix a leak from the supply lines by replacing them.
The Water Heater Nipples
If you’ve already replaced the supply lines and water is still leaking near them, it might be coming from the water heater nipples, which connect the supply lines to the heater. Because there is a seam at the threads, it isn’t unusual to find a leak in this spot. You can fix it by simply replacing the water heater nipples.
The T&P Relief Valve
If there’s water coming from the temperature and pressure relief valve, it’s important to take a moment to figure out why. This valve typically leaks only when something is wrong so ask yourself:
- Has the valve been removed recently? If so, the seal might not be correct.
- Is the water too hot? Consider lowering the temperature of the heater or investing in a water expansion tank.
- Is the water pressure too high? You may need a pressure regulator.
If none of the above applies to you, the valve may need replacement.
The Drain Line
Another common source of leaks is the drain line. After flushing or draining a water heater the drain valve may not close completely. You can fix this by completely replacing the valve or capping it with a hose cap.
The Tank Itself
If none of the previous sources are leaking, you may have a leak from the tank. This is caused by wear and tear and usually appears as a major leak, not a drip. Unfortunately, water heater repair isn’t an option, and you will need to have a new water heater installed.
